Adventure Cycling Association's
C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage

Back in January we were approached by the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) about the possibility of catering their eight day long bike trip up the Historic C&O Canal and into the Great Allegheny Passage. To cater a group for eight straight days would be difficult to say the least.

Fortunately when ACA approached us, we were mulling the possibility of acquiring a mobile catering vehicle. We've had to cater events where there was little if any kitchen facilities -- or to arrive at a place to discover that the full oven that we were told was available, was in actuality a microwave. A catering trailer with a full kitchen that we could bring onsite would not only simplify our production times, but improve the quality of the food by having it literally come right out of the oven!

Well, we went ahead and acquired the vehicle and the ACA C&O Canal trip was its maiden voyage. For eight days we followed approximately 45 cyclists and staff and fed them a hot breakfast and dinner. We also made up bag lunches for them to take on their rides.

The breakfasts usually consisted of eggs, pancakes, bacon/sausages, grits, scrapple, bagels/muffins, cereal/oatmeal, and of course juice, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Dinners were more varied with each night having a different theme which included:

  • Asian
  • South-Western
  • Italian
  • From the Grill
  • Continental
  • BBQ

The stops ranged from full service RV Camp sites with water and electric, an urban area where we able to only get water and limited electrics, to rustic campgrounds where we had to make our own power and provide our own water. Our stops were:

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Brunswick, MD
  3. Williamsport, MD
  4. Little Orleans, MD
  5. Cumberland, MD
  6. Rockwood, MD
  7. Connellsville, PA
